GK Canada holding Emergency Fundraiser for ‘Yolanda’ victims

Gawad Kalinga Canada is urging everyone to join Kapit Kamay sa Pagdamay: Emergency Fundraising for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) on Nov. 16, 2013, Saturday at St. Buenaventure Catholic Church parish hall. The fundraiser will start at 6:30 p.m.
Typhoon Yolanda slammed into the Visayas region on Nov. 8 where it leveled buildings and seaside homes. As of Nov. 10, 138 were reported dead and the death toll is expected to rise to 1200, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Philippines. The same agency reported the estimated damages to property and agriculture at P7 million pesos. Hardest hit was Tacloban City in Leyte.

The super typhoon is one of the strongest storms on record, with sustained winds of 235 km/h with gusts of 275 km/h when it made landfall. It was comparable to a category 4 hurricane in the United States. The storm surges had uprooted trees, caused landslides and left about 750,000 evacuees.GK Canada executive director Viethmier Cuevas is urging everyone with something extra to spare to help the typhoon victims. "Come out and join us. Yolanda may have been the strongest typhoon on record, but I believe that the Filipinos' love for their country and fellowmen surpasses this storm's strength," Cuevas said.He stressed that donations, in cash and in cheques, are now being accepted. Donors can get charity receipts upon request. GK Canada is a registered non-profit organization with charity registration no. 8415 83917 RR0001. All donations will be forwarded to GK Philippines which has already activated its disaster relief operations called Operation Walang Iwanan for super typhoon Yolanda. Details can be found here. The fundraising organizers are also accepting donations in kind which will be used as door and raffle prizes for the event. Those who wish to donate, help or need more information about the fundraiser may contact Cuevas at 647.869.1808, e-mail: viethmier@gmail.com; or Cheryl Cantonjos, at 647.962.2002, e-mail: ccantonjos@gmail.com.* Click here to download the flyer.
