GK Canada is excited to announce that the Alex Chiu Annual Golf Tournament Committee (ACAGTC) has donated funds (in the amount of CAD$18K) toward a full scholarship for three students from the province of Leyte to the School of Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) program.

Several years ago, Councillor Alex Chiu, his wife Alicia and other members of the ACAGTC had the opportunity to visit the Philippines and observe the various projects that Gawad Kalinga has been working on. One of the visits included the GK Enchanted Farm where they were able to witness and learn about the SEED program.

SEED Philippines is the first school dedicated to social entrepreneurship in the Philippines. Its focus is on the training and development of students (from disadvantaged families) into business leaders. This is based on the philosophy that given the education and training, these students will be equipped to become self-sufficient, and have the opportunity to create sustainable wealth for themselves and their families.
This generous donation will positively impact not just the lives of these three students and their families, but it will also contribute towards the betterment of their communities and the future economic transformation of the country.

In past years, ACAGTC has also made contributions for other initiatives through GK Canada. These include financial donations toward the building of 20 housing units for the victims of typhoon Haiyan and for the victims in Leyte.

At the local level, the Alex Chiu Annual Golf Tournament has raised in excess of $2M (over 20 years) which have benefitted many not-for-profit organizations including:
ALS Double Play
Cherish Integrated Services
Centre for Immigrant and Community Services (CICS)
Mackenzie Health
Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians
Markham Rudy Bratty YMCA
Markham Stouffville Hospital
Markhaven Home for Seniors
Rizal Monument Fund
S.E.A.S. (Support Enhance Access Service) Centre
Southlake Regional Health Centre
Unionville Home Society
United Way of Greater Toronto (York Region)
York Regional Police
and other not-for-profit organizations.

On behalf of GK Canada, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for this generous donation from the Alex Chiu Annual Golf Tournament Committee*.

*Committee members include Alex and Alicia Chiu, Cherrie-Marie Chiu, Philip and Sue Bautista, Freda de Jesus, and Ernie and Tessie Ting.
